What is INCI? A Quick Guide to Cosmetic Ingredients

INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is the standardized system for naming cosmetic ingredients worldwide. Established by the EU and adopted globally, INCI names appear on every cosmetics label so consumers can identify exactly what they're putting on their skin.

Ingredients are always listed in descending order of concentration — the first ingredients make up the largest portion of the formula. Ingredients present at less than 1% can be listed in any order. This means the first 5-6 ingredients typically make up 80% or more of the product.

Understanding your INCI list is the key to making informed choices about your skincare, makeup, and beauty products. Our free checker analyzes every ingredient against trusted databases including EU CosIng, CIR safety reports, and EU Regulation 1223/2009.
